Slim Xtreme Side Effects: Herbal Slimming Pills Recalled by FDA. “Slim Xtreme Herbal Slimming Capsule” contains an unsafe substance and may increase its user’s blood pressure and heart rate according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The weight-loss product, marketed extensively online and on false claims of being “100% natural,” contains a controlled substance that can increase blood pressure and pulse rate in those who take it.

The FDA has since warned consumers not to buy or use Slim Xtreme Herbal Slimming Capsule, a product distributed by Globe All Wellness, LLC.

FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Slim Xtreme Herbal Slimming Capsule contains sibutramine, a controlled substance withdrawn from the U.S. market in October 2010 for safety reasons.

The maker has since voluntarily withdrawn the product, and as of May 2011, no illnesses or injuries have been in connection with this product.

Slim Xtreme Side Effects. Slim Xtreme Herbal Slimming poses a threat to consumers because sibutramine can substantially increase blood pressure and /or pulse rate in some patients. It may also present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias and stroke.

“Consumers should stop using this product immediately and throw it away. Consumers who have experienced any negative side effects should consult a health care professional as soon as possible,” the FDA said.

Slim Xtreme Herbal Slimming Capsule may also interact in life threatening ways with other medications a consumer may be taking, the FDA said in an advisory on May 10, 2011.

Some of these drugs with potentially life-threatening reactions to sibutramine are:

  • Anti-depressant monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), and tranylcypromine (Parnate); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, in Symbyax), fluvoxamine, paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); and selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor)
  • Nutritional supplements to help you lose weight like benzphetamine (Didrex), methamphetamine (Desoxyn), phendimetrazine (Adipost, Bontril, others) and phentermine (Adipex-P, Phentride, others).
  • Medications for anxiety, mental illness, seizures, and pain such as lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • Sedatives and sleeping pills
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Tranquilizers
  • Medications for migraine headaches such as almotriptan (Axert), dihydroergotamine mesylate (Migranal), eletriptan (Relpax), ergoloid mesylates (Gerimal, Hydergine), ergonovine (Ergotrate, Methergine), ergotamine (Bellamine, Cafergot, others), frovatriptan (Frova), methysergide (Sansert), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex), and zolmitriptan (Zomig); medications for nausea such as alosetron (Lotronex), dolasetron (Anzemet), granisetron (Kytril)
  • Antiemetics ondansetron (Zofran) and palonosetron (Aloxi)
  • Cancer chemotherapy medications
  • Anticoagulants (‘blood thinners’) such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix) and heparin
  • Medications for high blood pressure and angina like diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac), verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan), and antiarrhythmic agents quinidine (Quinidex and amiodarone (Cordarone)
  • Caffeine-containing products including NoDoz, and Vivarin
  • Medications for allergies, coughs, and colds
  • Ashma medication zafirlukast (Accolate)
  • Imunosuppresants like cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
  • Danazol (Danocrine), a natural sex hormone used to treat endometriosis
  • HIV protease inhibitors such as indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), ritonavir (Norvir), and saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase)
  • Antiretroviral like delavirdine (Rescriptor)
  • Amino acids like tryptophan
  • Salicylate pain relievers such as aspirin, choline magnesium trisalicylate, choline salicylate (Arthropan), diflunisal (Dolobid), magnesium salicylate (Doan’s, others), and salsalate (Argesic, Disalcid, Salgesic);
  • Other pain relievers such as fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic), ticlopidine (Ticlid), meperidine (Demerol, Mepergan) and pentazocine (Talcen, Talwin)
  • Antimalarial like quinidine (Quinidex)
  • Gold salts used to treat rheumatoid arthritis such as auranofin (Ridaura) and aurothioglucose (Solganal)
  • Sulfa antibiotics such as sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole (Urobiotic), sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), and sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin, Pediazole);
  • Antibiotics like erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Erythrocin), metronidazole (Flagyl), troleandomycin (TAO) and clarithromycin (Biaxin, Prevpac)
  • Antifungals such as fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), and ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Anti-tuberculosos drug isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid)

Other Globe All Wellness slimming products such as Slim Extreme Gold and Gelslim have not been declared unsafe by the FDA nor recalled by the manufacturer.

Until it was declared a controlled substance in the United States in 2010, Sibutramine was routinely prescribed to people who wanted to lose weight.

• Patients below 18 and above 65 years of age
• Concomitant treatment with a MAO inhibitor, antidepressant or other centrally active drugs, particularly other anoretics
• History of peripheral arterial disease
• Hypertension that is not sufficiently controlled (e.g., > 145/90 mmHg), caution in controlled hypertension
• Existing pulmonary hypertension
• Existing damage on heart valves, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, serious arrhythmias, previous myocardial infarction
• A history of coronary artery disease (angina, myocardial infarction), congestive heart failure, tachycardia, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, arrhythmia or cerebrovascular disease (stroke or transient ischemic attack)
• Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
• Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland)
• Closed angle glaucoma
• Seizure disorders
• Enlargement of the prostate gland with urinary retention (relative C.I.)
• Pheochromocytoma
• Pregnant and lactating women (relative C.I.)
